Launch of a Collaborative Project with Toyota Motor Corporation to Establish Digital Standards (DX) for PFAS Measurement Technologies —Consortium for analysis and remediation of per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (CAR-PFAS JAPAN)

Building a Reliable Common Data Analysis Platform for PFAS Measurement Results and Establishing Standards to Support the Process from “measurement” to “decision-making”

Consortium for analysis and remediation of per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (CAR-PFAS JAPAN), administered by Campus Create Co., Ltd., is launching a collaborative project on PFAS measurement technologies utilizing “WAVEBASE,” a data analysis platform developed by Toyota Motor Corporation.

This project aims to build a common platform for reliable data analysis of PFAS measurement results that can be used across a wide range of industries. At the same time, the project will develop WAVEBASE as a digital platform for PFAS analysis, with the goal of improving the efficiency and effectiveness of PFAS countermeasures and promoting their implementation in society.

This initiative is driven by advances in technology aimed at enhancing PFAS measurement technologies (Jiao et al., Nature Communications / Yu et al., Nature Machine Intelligence, 2025). By integrating artificial intelligence (AI), open databases, and the international standard analytical method ISO 21675 in sophisticated ways, technological development is rapidly progressing to support the detection and identification of previously unknown PFAS present in products and environmental samples. This is expected to enable more comprehensive and practically relevant PFAS assessment and management, in addition to the conventional approach of measuring and managing a limited number of individual compounds.
The technology is also expected to provide a foundation for companies and manufacturers that use PFAS to proactively manage the environmental impacts associated with PFAS throughout the production and distribution of their products.

In this collaborative project, based on Campus Create Co., Ltd.’s experience as a wide-area Technology Licensing Organization (TLO), we will explore collaboration with industry, academic and professional societies, analytical instrument manufacturers, and other stakeholders. We will advance the development of machine-learning applications specialized in feature analysis and PFAS analysis, as well as develop practical use cases based on real-world applications.

Through these efforts, we aim to establish a “digital standard (DX)” for PFAS analysis at an early stage and promote the development of a framework that supports the entire process from “measurement” to “decision-making” in PFAS analysis. Ultimately, we aim to improve the efficiency and sophistication of PFAS countermeasures in Japan and promote their implementation in society.

About WAVEBASE

WAVEBASE is a cloud-based data analysis platform developed by Toyota Motor Corporation. It is a Materials Informatics (MI) platform that supports the utilization of data in materials development and analysis.
WAVEBASE enables an end-to-end workflow, from preprocessing experimental and measurement data to feature extraction, statistical model development, and visualization of results, as well as recommendations for subsequent experimental conditions. It can therefore extract valuable insights even from relatively small datasets.
WAVEBASE combines Toyota’s extensive knowledge and expertise accumulated over many years of materials research and development with AI and machine-learning technologies. A key feature of the platform is its intuitive usability, even for users without specialized knowledge of data science. This enables the standardization of analytical processes that have traditionally depended heavily on individual expertise, improves reproducibility, and supports data-driven decision-making.
In this project, we will apply WAVEBASE to PFAS analysis to enable the structuring, sharing, and advanced analysis of analytical data. The platform will be utilized as a foundation for improving the efficiency and sophistication of PFAS analysis processes, as well as for supporting decision-making based on analytical results.

About Consortium for analysis and remediation of per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (CAR-PFAS JAPAN)

Consortium for analysis and remediation of per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (CAR-PFAS JAPAN) was established on June 21, 2021, with Dr. Nobuyoshi Yamashita, Senior Principal Research Scientist at the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST), serving as its Chair. The Consortium operated through March 31, 2025, with the objective of disseminating technological innovations developed at AIST, as well as the latest research findings from overseas, to Japanese industries, local governments, and other stakeholders, thereby strengthening PFAS countermeasure technologies in Japan, particularly in measurement and treatment.
In response to continued demand from industry, Campus Create Co., Ltd. has served as the Consortium’s secretariat since April 2025, and activities have continued under the new organizational structure.
